Michel MERGNY

Belgium - 1955

After discovering the saxophone thanks to François Daneels at the Music Academy of Tubize, Michel Mergny entered the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels, where he obtained the Superior Diplomas of Saxophone and Chamber Music.

Simultaneously, he obtained a First Prize of Clarinet at the Royal Music Conservatory of Mons. He has won several competitions (Pro Civitate, Tenuto). He teaches Saxophone at the Royal Music Conservatory of Mons and at the IMEP and pursues a soloist and chamber music career. He is one of the founding members of the Saxophone Quartet of Dinant. On the occasion of the International Adolphe Sax Year, he recorded a CD with the pianist Dominique Duhen entitled Parfums de Sax (Sax Perfumes) In 1990, he participated in the organisation of the European Saxophone Meeting in Dinant and, since then, he is an active Member of the Musical Committee of the International Adolphe Sax Association. Michel Mergny sits regularly as juror in different Belgian and foreign institutions. He has been member of the Jury or the Arbitration Committee in several Dinant competitions.

LISSENS Jean-Marc

Belgium - 1958

Jean-Marc Lissens received a complete training at the Royal Music Conservatory of Liege, with Albert Tyssens, whom he met at the age of 8 and who has followed him during all his studies.

He also completed his studies with François Daneels and Jean-Marie Londeix. His professional career at the service of the saxophone is committed and varied. After teaching at the Music Academies of Arlon, Visé, Aubel (Welkenraedt - La Calamine) and Waremme, and being supply teacher at the Royal Music Conservatory of Liege and in charge of the Course at the Royal Music Conservatory of Mons, Liege and at the IMEP, he currently teaches Saxophone at the Academy of Hannut and at the Conservatory of Huy, where he also teaches Chamber music.

In 1990, he participated actively in the European Saxophone Meeting in Dinant. In 1994, he became an active member of the Musical Committee of the International Adolphe Sax Association. He is a member of the Jury for the Competition for Young Saxophonists and, besides, belongs to the General Secretariat of the International Adolphe Sax Competition since 1994. He is invited on a regular basis to join the Philharmonic Orchestra of Liege and the Royal Opera of Wallonia in the framework of concerts in Belgium and abroad and is called to participate as Professor of Saxophone in international courses.

THE ARBITRATION COMMITTEE

BAL Nadine

Belgium - 1961

After obtaining a First Prize of Music theory at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels, Nadine Bal continued her training at the Lemmensinstituut of Leuven (First Prize of Saxophone and Chamber music, Superior Diploma of Saxophone - class of Norbert Nozy, First Prize of History of Music - class of Yves Knockaert).

She also obtained the Superior Diploma of Chamber Music at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels (class of Arie Van Lysebeth) and the Diploma of Performing Musician at the Music Conservatory of Maastricht (class of Norbert Nozy - 1989). She won the National Music Competition of the Crédit Communal (1980), the Edmond Hustinckx Competition (1989), and the Horplait-Dapsens Competition (1992). She is currently in charge of the course at the Lemmensinstituut of Leuven.

LEBLANC Philippe

Belgium - 1958

Philippe Leblanc graduated at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels, where he obtained the First Prizes of Clarinet (1978), Saxophone (class of François Daneels - 1980), the Superior Diploma of Chamber Music (1986), and at the Royal Music Conservatory of Liege, where he obtained the First Prize of Chamber Music (1982) and the Superior Diploma of Clarinet (class of Rigobert Mareels - 1985).

He completed his clarinet studies with soloists such as Walter Boeykens, Serge Dangain as well as in Paris with Roland Simoncini and his saxophone studies with international soloists such as François Daneels, Etienne Verschuren, Jacques Pelzer, Greg Badolato, John Ruocco and Joe Lovano. He has won several competitions (Pro-Civitate, Tenuto) and pursues a soloist and music chamber career and works with most Belgian orchestras. As versatile musician, he is also interested in very different fields, such as jazz (Lou Benett, Calvin Owens), French song (Julos Beaucarne, William Sheller), children songs (Gibus, Christian Merveille, Jofroi, Raphy), film and theatre music, New Age music (Bernard Lhoir) as well as ethnic music (Kabyle, Brazilian, Jewish and Black Africa music). He is a member of the New Belgian Sax Quartet and of the Klezmer Jazz Band (of which he is the founder), with which he has recorded two CD's. Philippe Leblanc currently teaches at the Royal Music Conservatory of Liege and at the Music Academy of Woluwé-St-Pierre. As active Member of the Musical Committee of the International Adolphe Sax Association, he is a member of the Jury for the Competition for Young Saxophonists and Member of the Arbitration Committee of the International Adolphe Sax Competition.

MAZZUCCO Joseph

Italy - 1949

Joseph Mazzucco, who graduated at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels, obtained the Superior Diplomas of Saxophone and Chamber Music in the class of François Daneels as well as the Diploma of Saxophone Methodology. Nowadays, he is in charge of the course at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels and teaches at the Music Academies of Tubize, Enghien and Anderlecht.

He is a founding member of the Saxophone Quartet of Dinant as well as of the François Daneels Saxophone Ensemble and Musical Director of the Enghien Orchestral Ensemble. Since 1996, Joseph Mazzucco also teaches Saxophone and Clarinet at the International Summer Academy of Belgium. As active Member of the Musical Committee of the International Adolphe Sax Association, he is part of the General Secretariat of the Competition for Young Saxophonist and a member of the Arbitration Committee of the International Adolphe Sax Competition.

SCHOLLAERT Luc

Belgium - 1949

Luc Schollaert, who graduated at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels, obtained the Superior Diplomas in Chamber Music (class of Arie Van Lysebeth) and Saxophone (class of François Daneels - 1974) as well as a Certificate in Wind band and Brass band conducting.

He has also taken courses of percussion, history of music, pedagogy, harmony and is interested in contemporary music and jazz. He is a member of the Musique Nouvelle group, conducted by Pierre Bartholomée and Henri Pousseur. He is a founding member of the Brussels Saxophone Quartet (with Willy Demey, Christina Van Geyte and Freddy Vanattenhoven) with which he has gone on tours throughout the world (Europe, USA, Australia, Asia) and is a member of the François Daneels Saxophone Septet and later Octet, of Belgium. He has participated in several World Saxophone Congresses (Bordeaux, London, Chicago, Nuremberg, Washington, Valencia, Montréal and Ljubljana). At the Montréal Congress, he presented, together with the actor Rob Frans, Duet pour Acteur et Saxophone , according to Cure d'Aspirines by Gerard Walschap. As collaborator for the BRT since 1971, he was a programmer for the radio and music advisor for the television for 15 years. In 1990, on the occasion of the 150 th anniversary of the invention of the saxophone, he founded the Hommage à Sax trio (saxophone, piano and violin) as well as a quartet bearing the same name. Luc Schollaert currently teaches Saxophone at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels (Dutch-speaking section) and Saxophone, Clarinet, Instrument Ensemble and Chamber Music at the Music Academies of Brussels, Alsemberg and Tervuren. He participated in the organisation of the European Saxophone Meeting (Dinant - 1990). As active Member of the Musical Committee of the International Adolphe Sax Association, he is a member of the Jury for the Competition for Young Saxophonists and a Member of the Arbitration Committee of the International Adolphe Sax Competition.
